I've struggled to find the words to describe the plot of this film, as the film itself barely gives you all of the details. The moments that wanted to be profound in dialogue, or lack thereof, fell flat. The conversations that would start to become engaging would be cut short, jumping to an everyday motif that would occur throughout the film. The language used in dialogue would transpire so instinctive at times it came off as unnatural. I would forget…
The confident, engaging persona of Amy Jolly (Marlene Dietrich) drew me into the beautifully crafted scene design of Morocco. The first half of the film really shines with her musical and bold performances, on and off stage. The playful banter with romantic lead Tom Brown (Gary Cooper) has you cheering for the couple from the beginning. At the halfway point, however, is as far as that excitement goes. It does eventually slide into a run-around of who should chase who, but the overall atmosphere and engagement of the two main leads are worth getting into.
A slow start to the film about a young Abraham Lincoln, back in his Illinois lawyer days, gradually brightens when Abraham's humor and wit become the centerfold of the film's engagement. Despite the young arrogance that Abraham sometimes exhibits, his genuine kindness and intelligence make you want to cheer him on and give him a big hug when he does well. Without the performance of Henry Fonda as Abraham, the film would fall under the victim of having clever dialogue…
