    Columbus

The plot of Columbus moves slowly and methodically, careful not to reveal too much too quickly. In this film, no character is easily defined. It takes place at a point in time where many of the main characters' conflicts are in their past. It's a story about finding a new way to live after making it through a troubled past. Shot compositions and cinematographic techniques are interesting and beautifully done. When the main tensions finally resolve themselves, it's satisfying and non-obvious.

    Morocco

This film, set in Morocco (though almost entirely ignoring Moroccan culture and people), follows the passions of three French visitors. The central driving force throughout the film is love, which, seemingly develops instantaneously. Amy Jolly (Marlene Dietrich) must choose between a wealthy bachelor and a soldier in the French Foreign Legion. The lack of distinction between the competing male characters makes it predictable and unsatisfying when Amy ultimately chooses her suitor.
