Okay, so I enjoyed this incarnation of Godzilla. The pros and cons are pretty much even for me, and after first viewing I was really happy to have watched a respectfully handled remake of Godzilla that captured the tone of the original movie. Overwrought, angsty and supremely pretentious. Yes, annoying movie - the red is symbolic of blood. We fucking get it. Basically your stock standard 'evil child for no reason' movie with a very lofty opinion of itself. I seriously rolled my eyes so many times during this one that they caught fire in their sockets and now I have two glass eyes, so thankyou very fucking much, annoying movie!
Hated everything about this except Tilda Swinton. One star for her.
Hey, I don't know why I liked this so much. It's slow and builds to a climax that never arrives - but for some reason I can't stop thinking about this film. A girl leaves a cult and hides out at her sister's house - that's about it for the plot, but this film is far more interested in character and specifically identity.
Olsen is really excellent here - as is the always terrific John Fawkes as the charismatic cult…
