    Oppenheimer

    ★★★★

No one knows what you believe in. Do you?

It's fitting that the J in Oppenheimer's name stands for nothing. The quintessential story of a man's obsessive pursuit of godhood rendering itself hollow when faced with an unconquerable behemoth. Nolan's unfocused, bizarre and exhilarating adaptation oftentimes resembles its eponymous character. While there is a deft emphasis on the machinations that undo Oppenheimer, his conflict is portrayed convincingly enough to justify his status as such a compelling, contradictory figure. It is…

    Dune

    ★★½

A sci-fi epic confined to Villeneuve's plainly austere, calculated manner of filmmaking. Dune operates at a similar register throughout, so much that it flattens the few moments that are genuinely meant to be awe inspiring. It flows like a crammed, clinical translation of events, moving from one set piece and story beat to the next, rarely basking in its empty space to breathe. Mandatory set-up and some cool world building are the end product - any emotional heft is assumedly left for its sequel.

    Hereditary

There is a 10 minute segment in Hereditary that alludes to an honest exploration of trauma and its impact on the family unit. The immediate regret and denial in Peter's face as it happens. The sharp screams reverberating from Annie's room as it is revealed. The set up for a raw depiction of grief — how do you navigate the aftermath of someone close to you being taken away so suddenly?

Hereditary then decides that emotional nuance isn't its forte,…

    Spring Breakers

    ★★★★★

The American Dream filtered through the ideal of Spring Break. There is a surprising sincerity in the way the Skrillex scored party scenes and overall debauchery are presented. It's what makes the movie so ambiguously oneiric, along with its Miami Vice inspired aestheticization of Florida. How much of this is fantasy vs. reality? The Everytime scene highlights this by juxtaposing the gruesome crimes depicted with Britney's emotional ballad, as some sort of twisted wish fulfillment. Korine also touches on the…
