Sound of Metal 2019
The bottom line is I don’t really need to see the movie again.
The sound design is awesome. There’s no denying that. And the acting, too.
But the plot is easy to predict, and the movie’s emotional intelligence would fall somewhere between The Pursuit of Happyness and Good Will Hunting, the latter of which I actually like. Just kinda feels cloying, and for that reason I can’t get behind it.

Matches The VVitch structurally and tonally. Reaches new heights in script-writing, acting, and editing. Does well by its source material, Melville’s journals. Felt like a torch-bearing film (“wickies” that these characters are) for a new wave in Dark Romanticism, perhaps paying back the debt it owed Melville and that old sea-faring drama played out among Ishmael, Ahab, and the Whale.
