The Spirit of the Beehive 1973
A bit underwhelmed, I’m not sure whether to appreciate it more or dock it with how coy it has to be with the censors at the time. I had a hard time connecting, maybe because of my general resistance to art movies about kids, though I was hit with a very sudden welling of grief that snuck up on me as Ana searched the empty soldier’s hideout. There’s some striking imagery and tragedy here, just wish it was more consistent.…

The 11th Annual On Cinema Oscar Special LIVE from AmatoCon 2024
I want to critique. I want to vent that I hate conventions and that basing the entire first half around a convention style format is too torturous and not funny enough to justify. Conventions already suck. Making fun of it doesn’t make it better.
But. Then you give me lines like “That’s the Babon map.” Or “I don’t like the bird.” And I remember I’m watching the best “Intellectual Property” (IP) out there.
A delight to watch in the theater.…

Waste of time. If this movie allies itself with anyone in its cliche factions it’s the generic Fame Monster crowds & empty suit sycophants it shoehorns into the narrative. Second movie I’ve seen today where someone mentions seeing Guernica in New York. I’d have two nickels.
