It's taking a little reflection to recognize what exactly is so distressing about this movie: namely, that it pays almost no direct attention to the structure (e.g., of structural racism, or geopolitics) but, instead, focuses entirely on the social navigation of that structure and the despair it engenders. The characters, depicted as if in a documentary -- which of course it actually is -- wander in an oblivion of unfulfilled desire, subterfuge, and false consciousness projected onto a "developing country."…
