Frozen 2013
This movie is so visually stunning that I couldn't help liking it for that alone. Luckily, that wasn't the only thing to like. The vocal performances are rock-solid and perfectly cast, the story is interesting, and the relationship between sisters Anna and Else is both beautiful and heart-rending. I laughed, I cried, I thoroughly enjoyed. I definitely recommend seeing it on the big screen before it leaves theaters - you won't regret it.

The Core 2003
So the premise is interesting, but sadly, that's the only interesting thing about this film. What follows is a bunch of phoned-in performances along with half-assed visual effects that make for two hours and ten-odd minutes of drudgery and disbelief on the part of the viewer. And yet, all things considered, the most unbelievable part for me was a geologist/professor who couldn't properly say the word "nuclear". Don't waste your time.

Dredd 2012

The Last Stand 2013
Was this a great movie? No. Was it entertaining? Yes. I especially enjoyed the climax, with the town coming under siege. The usual gun battle tropes were refreshingly absent; there was no blowback from gunshots, no people getting back up after being hit by machine gun fire. The final fight, of course, had to come down to fisticuffs, except it looked more like and old-school wrestling match, which was also unexpected. And when I say old-school wrestling, I'm not talking…
