If top gun were a soft-core porn movie with dialogue performed by reading cue cards off screen, an older VERY straight man's understanding of "girl power", and a sound department that recorded parts of the movie with kid's toy microphones (or just sometimes forgot to record sound??)
I love low budget, grindhousy exploitation movies, but honestly, this one manages to be only the first. It's not funny enough, not outrageous enough (although the first 20 minutes has three VERY awkward…
Letterboxd review: I like this Kurosawa better
Actual review: Cure is one of those films that just left a feeling of delightful dread in me. It is a horror crime mystery, but the horror is more psychological than gory and the mystery part is not necessarily what you expect. I want to be as vague as I can: the classical "solution" to the mystery technically reveals itself very fast, but you're still sitting wondering not "who" but "why" and more…
I THOUGHT I knew what I was going to see, but it was ten times as fucked up and insane as I imagined, and I have never seen anything quite like it (and I've seen Taxidermia). I was quite literally gaping, my mouth wide open, closer to the end
I will never emotionally recover from this
4,5/5 stars, absolute delight!
Scanners makes me realize that David Cronenberg's biggest strength is his horror-like Sci fi plots and how to get a hold of the best SFX artists. Not so much find the best actors.
Loved the plot, and even though the nature of the plot leaves room for a lo of lazy writing (because you neve really know what the scanners actually can do), but fortunately there are not too much of that.
The "scanner" moments are sort of hilarious though. Imagine playing those scenes out in front of the camera, no sound, just Cronenberg going "more!" or something off camera
