Elliot set himself a stratospherically high bar with Mary & Max, a definitive childhood watch for me. So not too surprising that this had a weaker storyline in many ways. One plot arc in particular had a very deflating effect that felt like a betrayal of my emotional investment.

Still the film of was very compelling moment to moment. Small touches like a claymation Two Ronnies and a brutal (and completely accurate!) roast of Canberra were delightful.

Depictions of mental illness in classic literature are so fascinating in the way they are portrayed as deep character flaws. Like really this guy just needs a Zoloft regimen and some talk therapy to process his childhood and he’d live the vibrant life that appears impossible to him. No, older generations didn’t “get over” their mood disorders. They were just forced to let it limit them for the rest of their life.

Lena tags along with a friend group of shallow yuppie types including her boyfriend. Increasingly she feels bored, left out, but mostly just unfulfilled. The city of Moscow is omnipresent. She and her social circle become increasingly miniscule, engulfed by the vast landscape and population of the perpetually moving, pulsing city. A hint of a deeper human connection seems to sprout up feebly, framed by the urban bustle that frame Lena's day to day life. Will it amount to anything…
