"He said I'm gonna live to be a hundred."

No life lived so fully is a life lived in vain. No life that touched so many people. A life that kept trucking no matter what, and doing it all his way.

There's no shortage of things I could write about how David Lynch impacted me. I've done it before right here on this website and I'll probably do it many times in the future. He really helped mold my artistic…

It really is a literary high, you dig? I haven't had something match up with my internal metronome in this way since my last re-read of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas on a plane bound for a work conference in Cleveland. This absolutely marches to the beating off of my drum. The crusty allure, the self-flagellation, the addiction to the creative process, the feuding inspirational points of the classics and the contemporary media zeitgeist and your peers' interests and…

Thinking there's some kind of trinity of "existential geezer roadtrip movies" to be made. The Straight Story, Wild Strawberries, and this.

It's always a good time to go blind into a movie theater, doubly so when it's a 16mm show, triply even when it ends up being a surprise masterpiece. This was exactly what I needed, a nice glass of scotch and plain water, all the vitamins and flax seeds and shoulder massages I could have asked for.

    Not only…

I always forget just how loaded with "that guy" actors this is. Brad Dourif, Christopher Lloyd, Danny DeVito, Scatman Crothers, Michael Berryman. Packed business. And of course, Mr. Nicholson himself, pre-empting the still-to-come Mr. Torrance, swinging for the fences with this fervent live-free-or-die Tasmanian-Devil-type all-destructive chaotic entropic sleazebag.

Nurse Ratched as a character has absolutely been twisted and slandered through the years, lofted high as some kind of ultimate villain, but really she comes off as a quite neutral force.…

Much like Presence was a family affair masquerading as a haunted house horror, Black Bag appears to be a monogamy drama disguised as a spy thriller, and I just couldn't care less about it. Our lead duo make me think too much of weirdo eugenics parents who dream of CRISPRing the perfect baby, all the characters are annoying and obsessed with bickering, the polygraph scene stretches on for an eternity, the story is simultaneously confusingly convoluted yet spartan and bare,…

Appreciated its baffling cheesy needledrop-filled anachronistic nature way more than I thought I would. A cherishable relic from that brief bright optimistic time, post-millenium but pre-9/11, a wonderful window where anything went.

Would have liked it a whole lot more if it shaved off 30-45 minutes though, a touch long in the tooth.
