Nosferatu 2024
Bleak and often horrifying, this is Dracula on some dark crack and it goes to some nasty and utterly hopeless places. Powered by excellent performances and Eggers’ forensic approach to period detail. Gorgeous and uneasily provocative film making, as you’d come to expect by now.

Joker: Folie à Deux 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I liked this even more on a re-watch. I’ve always felt that the original was often judged as a nihilistic power fantasy, and people responded to that based on their own personal values. It riffed heavily on character study pictures like Taxi Driver, so that was always my take on it, and this does an interesting job of building on that concept.
I also see the ending as potentially metaphorical. Arthur Fleck is dead but the Joker (“the shadow”) perseveres.

All Quiet on the Western Front 2022
Devastatingly good. A raw portrayal of the utter shitshow of war, uncoloured by sentiments of honour and patriotism. Bleak as hell, but utterly gripping.
