  Sensitively made and well-informed with genuine compassion. A lot of it rides on the two lead performances, which are just terrific. Hoffman’s role is widely lauded, but this also showcases one of Cruise’s finer dramatic performances; It leans into his star-like charm but he handles the delicacy of his arc very aptly. A beautiful journey of bonding and understanding.

  Grim, bittersweet, funny and raw. Kinetically edited with a permeating atmosphere throughout. Voight and Hoffman make an incredible odd couple, and that ending still hits like a tonne of bricks.

  Bleak and often horrifying, this is Dracula on some dark crack and it goes to some nasty and utterly hopeless places. Powered by excellent performances and Eggers’ forensic approach to period detail. Gorgeous and uneasily provocative film making, as you’d come to expect by now.
