So many reviews about this led me to expect little but this is a really good film. It’s not about the politics. It is about war journalists and how they cope with the horrific shit they see. It was fast moving, the performances were strong and there were no brainless sub-plots to water it down. Also, the soundtrack is perfect.

Fell on this while reading Herzog’s memoirs. A documentary he made in 1974 about a Swiss ski jumper competing in Yugoslavia is still fresh and compelling. The music by Popol Vuh is stunning.

Poor Things leaves an impression. The sets and costumes are spectacular. The world Lanthimos creates gives him the latitude to defy conventions and have characters who don’t adhere to traditional roles.
I found it very funny which clashed with the fact that it was also trying to be a serious film. I found it to be very entertaining and unexpected but was unable to suspend disbelief and forget that I was watching a film.
I think this wins 2024 Oscars for best adapted screenplay, costumes, art direction and sound.

I really liked the premise of this film and what it explored; the fact that some black writers feel compelled to play up stereotypes in their work to appeal to publishers and the mass market. The dialogs were great as were the performances. It got a little slow and demonstrative in the middle, in my opinion and could have been shorter but I enjoyed it and learned from it.
