  Can’t recommend this enough. Spike Lee meets Quintin Tarantino with superb acting.  Ethan Hawke gives such an incredible performance and fully embraces his role as John Brown. I appreciated how the differing perspectives regarding Browns morality and sanity were presented, especially the debates and doubts within the abolitionist community.

  John Cassavetes is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Interesting to see this after watching A Woman Under the Influence (1974) which offers a painstakingly accurate portrait of a couple at odds in blue-collar suburbia. This time, rather than a couple in trouble, viewers are thrown into the gritty underworld of a nightclub owner whose misfortune catches up with him. What's remarkable is the jump Cassavetes makes intellectually, and thematically between the two films. Shifting from domestic doom to money…
