The cast is pretty stacked, but nothing got me quite like that Paul Dano jump scare. And the film is certainly a great concept. Somewhere in there, there’s an excellent movie. The themes are on the nose but strong, there are some deeply poignant moments, and the story takes some really cool turns. It unfortunately just doesn’t feel all that cohesive, and the pacing is a bit off. Nevertheless, add this to the list of things I’ve seen that have made me want to go vegetarian (though I fear I like meat too much to ever actually commit).

The Host 2006
This certainly packs some awesome action. The theme is clear and well-crafted as a whole. And the acting is impressive all-around. I just couldn’t help but feel like it was a bit overstuffed, and did not leave enough time to explore some of the characters themselves. But that aside, this is a really impressive effort from Bong Joon Ho.

The Substance 2024
There are some really cool artistic shots for sure. And at least…a lot of the gore serves a purpose. Even if it’s really hard to watch at some points. And hard to watch out of frustration too. It’s all certainly disturbing, but I suppose that’s the point. Thematically, there’s nothing subtle about it, but it works. Demi Moore is outstanding, of course. And while the ending goes a bit off the rails, this no doubt provided a spectacle with some thought-provoking…substance.

A Real Pain 2024
Damn. The themes all connect seamlessly, which was no small task. And it is simultaneously poignant, funny, and thought-provoking. Kieran Culkin delivers a truly Oscar-worthy performance, and his chemistry with Jesse Eisenberg is awesome. To Eisenberg’s credit, he also directs the hell out of this film. There are so many beautiful, meaningful shots. I think I need to go to Poland now. All in all, this is outstanding.
