    Charming short film about two people meeting and starting a relationship. Mike Leigh is just brilliant. For seventeen minutes, things were remarkably developed. Not sure how I felt about Clive, as his whole personality seemed to be corny jokes, but it seemed to work for Joy.

    I put this on because I saw that it was only eighty-eight minutes, and I read somewhere that it was a musical, so I figured it would be a quick way to pass the time, and being a musical I probably wouldn’t like it all that much anyway and tune out during the songs and dancing.

    This film is so silly, but it knows it, so that helps make it work. It definitely tries to poke fun at romantic comedies and slashers, and I appreciate how that led to an effort to give us a real story, even if it is super cheesy (and the acting and dialogue didn’t help—but that could have been intentional). The kills were also pretty cool, even if I could have used a bit more. Overall, not a bad contemporary slasher.

    This is a film of great historical importance, and, unfortunately, increasingly relevant once again. It does an excellent job of examining how average citizens went along with fascism and genocide. I also thought the questions surrounding national identity and patriotism were explored in a thought-provoking and nuanced way. 

    However, as a work of cinema, I found it somewhat disappointing, especially given (or because of) its reputation. For some reason, I cringed every time Maximillian Schell spoke, as his performance felt…
