I was struck by some parallels to Goodfellas. It’s the story of a young person who desperately wants to rise above their means and lot in life. It’s similarly propulsive with great humor throughout the first two acts plus the same chaotic and madcap energy. Unfortunately for Ani, we also see her lose almost everything like Henry did in the third act.

I don’t know if this is way better than the first one or if I was just in a better headspace for it, but I had fun.
I don’t think I would have ever asked for Director Bong to make a spiritual successor to Okja with his blank check movie, but this was a great time at the theaters. The two big complaints are the exposition dump in the beginning and uneven performances outside of Pattinson and Ackie. The metaphors are certainly on the nose throughout, but that didn’t bother me too much. I think Pattinson’s made for this type of black comedy and he carried so much of the burden.
Soderbergh’s handle on so many different genres is just amazing. It’s a really well-done spy whodunnit story, but the romance at the center is what makes it great. Fassbender and Blanchett are pitch perfect.
I’m starting to get accustomed to a great Soderbergh film in the theaters very few months and I’m not sure if I can go back now.
