Pretty decent action/thriller. Great performances by Samuel L. Jackson, Geena Davis, and most of all, Brian Cox. I wish the conspiracy/mystery aspect was more intriguing, though.

Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song 1971
I was deeply turned off by the underaged child’s naked sex scene in the beginning of this—and I just could not recover from that. I guess I have appreciation for this paving the way for other Black independent artists, but outside its place in cinematic history, I just didn’t see anything of value to this. Well, the nighttime shots of the city were cool. Hard to believe this was made by the same filmmaker who did Watermelon Man and Story of a Three Day Pass.

Heart Eyes 2025
This film is so silly, but it knows it, so that helps make it work. It definitely tries to poke fun at romantic comedies and slashers, and I appreciate how that led to an effort to give us a real story, even if it is super cheesy (and the acting and dialogue didn’t help—but that could have been intentional). The kills were also pretty cool, even if I could have used a bit more. Overall, not a bad contemporary slasher.
