Deceived 1991
Not every director manages to turn the eye contact between two strangers in a restaurant into an opening scene that gives you goosebumps. This marriage fraud thriller does a lot of other things right, even if it is a bit too conventionally told in the middle section. The depicted setting of art dealers and museum curators would be worth its own preppy TV series spin-off.

Stillwater 2021
The script is strongly reminiscent of a crime series on HBO, making it a bit too predictable. Nevertheless, the film is beautifully shot and also gets through on an emotional level. This is mainly due to a charming class-transcending love story, which is something you would like to see more often in today's new culture wars. When tenderness is emerging between the left-wing French alternative theater milieu and the American Midwest, then cinema as a dream machine still has something to give us.
