Ex Machina 2015
So little is original in this. Way too many overdone AI and sci-fi tropes and it doesn’t really say anything about the tech and who controls it beyond what we already know and have seen a million times. The only interesting study was on men’s objectification of women.
It was also kinda boring - I felt the pacing was so off and lowkey nothing much happens in the film aside from drawn out, cliche dialogue chock-full of forced one liners…

Monkey Man 2024
Great shots and loved the immersion in the Indian setting and culture. Allegories to current day Indian political / societal issues (Modi, minority oppression, etc) was also done really well. Dragged in various parts though. The first half was repetitive and film didn’t need to be that long. Dev Patel was really good and some of the action sequences were beautiful

I'm Still Here 2024
A stunning and very painful portrait of the life of a happy, comfortable middle-class family torn apart by brutal political oppression. Fascism spares no dissidents. A real emotional tear jerker - not a dry eye in the house.
The acting performances are all superb - Fernanda Torres conjures the epitome of steadfast strength - the cinematography is so wonderful and warm, and the dialogue and interactions between the family members feels so natural.
