This is a lovely adaptation of a marvellous novel. The child playing Amerigo is fantastic, and all the acting and setting are pretty good. Unfortunately so much has been inevitably edited out from the book that the narrative here jumps a bit too quickly and there’s no time to become acquainted with characters or situations. It’s much better than a lot of average adaptations, but still falls short of delivering a work that can stand for itself and be independent del the source material.

Le Cercle Rouge 1970
Utter 70s gorgeousness, cold, melancholy and still so human. Incredible use of silence, incredible use of superstars under complete control, majestic control of colour tone. Asexual moodiness all over the place. Only a mild sexual tension between the two demi-gods Delon and Volontè. In my dreams they run away with the jewels and live happily ever after. I wish Jean-Pierre Melville were alive to remake all of Tarantino's films. Then I would probably like them.

La Notte 1961
Big mid XX century Milan architecture eats up Jeanne Moreau, Mastroianni watches indifferent. She's regurgitated into the city's hinterland, an impossible nostalgia of countryside. They go to a billionaire's party, maybe he will swallow Mastroianni whole. Vitti is too clever not to be bored. Who's the living? Who's the dead? Who's the most beautiful? An old memory, a last trace of beauty. Will it be destroyed?
