Beautiful cinematography. Saint Lucia looks magnificent in every season. Moving story about an Italian town in midst of the second world war.
As Tolstoy said there are only two stories in the whole of literature; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town. This is the latter and it is crafted sublimely.
My main negative which prevents me from giving the movie 5 stars is the long drag in the middle of the movie that I feel could've used one or two more high notes.
In a certain sense, the most unbiased and robust metric for how much you enjoyed a film is how many times you watched it.
Re-watching this for the umpteenth time, I feel I must give it 5 stars. Re-watching a movie you notice its strengths and weaknesses to a much great degree. There are certainly weaknesses in this movie. Nonetheless I keep coming back.

You often get the impression that the current generation are so obsessed with sex as they have nothing else to say. Certainly this movie has nothing to say. It can never get past injecting increasingly vulgar sex into every scene as to go without it would mean one would have to rely on the quality of the story.
