Everything this movie is about is incredibly interesting. I was completely unaware of the Chilean coup or its aftermath until I saw Missing, the 1982 Costa Gravas film a few years back. I dove into the history after that and learned about so much of the murky politics and violent cover-ups. This movie isn’t really concerned with being an all-encompassing portrayal of the tumultuous events, but rather an intimate story of a more unknown aspect of the Pinochet regime.

It's really incredible how perfect the period styling is for this. Every aspect recreates the look and feel of that era, and Haynes uses the setting to explore themes and ideas that have intrigued him his whole career. I loved the use of reds and greens; not enough movies utilize green. Everything just looked so lush and sensual!
