I feel sick for enjoying this in a certain way, but maybe there’s something psychologically satisfying about how horror movies let you experience horrible things in a safe fashion. And this movie portrays probably the most horrible thing that could possibly happen, which is the horror element of it even if it isn’t a conventional horror movie otherwise. It’s also undoubtably an extreme black comedy, playing out like a fucked-up sitcom scenario where one character is trying to hide something…

I wanted to like this more but it lost me when the supernatural elements came in, which should have been when it got interesting. It has a strong style that initially captures the alienation of the protagonist amidst endless hookups. There’s a solid foundation but then the ghost fuck-boy character appears and it doesn’t seem to have much to say beyond the obvious. Which is fine but it’s all drags without much tension or stakes and fizzles out. I feel bad not liking movies like this cause there’s definitely some intention and passion behind it but it just didn’t reach me.

Not in the sense that it’s dated, since it actually has a timeless feel, but in the sense that it epitomizes a style of horror/suspense that came out of that era and is distinctive to it. It’s an atmospheric slow burn that’s never boring because every…

In honour of William Friedkin’s recent passing I decided to finally watch this. I was immediately blown away by how gorgeous it looks. It hits the magic balance of grit/realism and Impressionism/artsyness, finding the grim beauty in the urban geography. Overall the vibes are immaculate. It’s so hypnotic and captivating dispute the straightforwardness of the plot. I especially love Willem Dafoe in this. He’s scummy and brutal, but also delicate and beautiful. He has a Bowie-like androgyny and intensity that…
