  Had the makings of something like Sweet Smell of Success or even later movies like After Hours/Wake in Fright/Good Time/Uncut Gems, but the main character is essentially absent from the film and the different storylines never gelled together in my opinion. As an example, it bothered me that whenever Johnny's accomplices were killed/captured, he never seemed to care or even have a way of knowing that it happened.
