    shout out to mira nair at NYFF's 30th anniversary 4K restoration screening+convo explaining how she stood firm for the lead interracial couple in this movie to be fully non-white, a rarity sadly even today, preserving the key themes around colorism, anti-blackness, non-white class/racial conflict, etc. (+ she was THE most pleasant conversationalist)

    love this era of queer indie flicks. a cache of classic 90s lesbian woc relationships right up there with the watermelon woman, but its indian-american specificity feels like a rare treat to witness

    keeping in mind it's a product of its time, if there were ever a remake or sequel i'd challenge to update the girlfriend to be non-white (something that still plagues depictions of queer woc relationships today, not just here)—just a thought :)
