The Searchers 1956
Such a complicated movie with so much to talk about. It def wasn’t as *revolutionary* in its depiction of Native Americans as I sort of thought it would be based on the hype, but still led to some really interesting critiques of Ethan’s brand of violent white masculinity.
I especially appreciated the relationship between Ethan and Martin and Martin’s Cherokee ancestry. And the scene where they were shooting the buffalo and Martin tried to restrain Ethan, only for the latter…

So much to say…
1. Should not have been a musical… why were they singing?
2. Zoe Saldaña ate (and deserved more of an arc)
3. Very odd and incorrect representations of being trans
4. The stereotypes were unreal. No way the kid said she smells like “mezcal and guacamole”
5. Was not left with any larger takeaway from it. Felt like it really wanted to send a message about political violence, being trans, and redemption but it truly didn’t give me anything complicated, nuanced, or expected.
