Koko the Clown is antagonized by flying insects.
Koko the Clown is antagonized by flying insects.
Oh, you know it's gonna be a good one based on the title alone. Also, can I just say, the 50ms shot of Max laughing at Koko usually gets me more than any gag in the whole thing, I don't even know why.
KOKO SWATS ‘EM
Flies beset creator and cartoon alike. It would seem the winged agents of chaos have designs on the coxcomb. The two warring chordates decide to form a united front of sugar and vinegar so as to put a stop to the bug takeover. The next world war may be fought with sticks, stones, and heavy duty manual fly swatters. Koko is struck on his with ideas, bluntly and repeatedly. He devises selected sugar perimeters, jerry-rigged scarecrow decoys, strategic barrel machinations, and a rare klose-up shot. Max tries flypaper. Foiled yet again, the flies must bide their time for that encroaching day, the one sung of to larvae and dreamt about by the aged; first, the Inkwell — tomorrow, the world. Palpus up. It’s not the 2 to 3 weeks of your life that matter, but the life in your 2 to 3 weeks.
Pretty certain for like 10-20 seconds there they had rotoscoping, hand drawn, stop motion animation all occuring at once. It was quite phenominal to see. The flies and their clumsy millitaristic organization was the best part and pretty clever. You know what would have fixed this without the chaos and stickiness? Spiders.
The rotoscope!
The meta gags!
The flies organizing!
Superb short.
Really interesting that they already dipped back into a concept for a second go around here (Koko and Max vs flies). Maybe this was the revenge since there was only 1 fly before
A kind of remake of The Tantalizing Fly that shows how much the inkwell has improved with many more gags a second and more complex animation. Yet, it’s not as funny and zippy as the original.
Do flies eat ink? What was ink made of in the '20s? Seems like they already did this with a single fly, but I guess why not make a sequel. Quite a bit of non-rotoscoped Koko.
KoKo vs. the titular creature in this inventive animated short.
