A Wife Confesses 1961
I greatly appreciate the direct themes and ideas presented. You can tell how dangerous it must have felt at the time to be confronting Japanese misogyny in this fashion. Unfortunately Masumura hadn’t quite yet mastered this sort of synecdoche so we’re left with the literal part of the story being a dull court room story cut with a sweltering melodrama that feels lecture like rather than experiential. The baseline quality Masumura and his crew bring keep this afloat, but it’s never more than an okay film.

Beasts of the Southern Wild 2012
If this isn't the worst film nominated for best picture it comes pretty close considering how it offends all senses and sensibility. This is just an incompetently made film with stuff out of focus and a shaky cam that makes Greengrass look sober.
