Vikram should get the 'Father of the Year' award for not green lighting Bala's version. It takes immense courage and conviction(and cash) to go against a maverick director and re-shoot a film from scratch.
Forget likable hero, even the supporting characters and their equations with the hero(something that 'Arjun Reddy' had in abundance) did not exist in the film. A lot of so-called 'bold' scenes turned out to be crass. The dialogs were poor and the acting was OTT.
Allow Tamil directors to make films in genres/setting that they are comfortable doing, instead of hiring them for movies out of their comfort zones.
'Varma' should have remained in the cans forever!
P.S. Even the 1* is for the respect I have for Bala.
Arjun Reddy minus the passion, indulgence, life, soul, etc. Actually u know what just don't bother
Not a single frame is distinctive, or shows that a major filmmaker is behind the camera. You get the feeling Bala was forced to direct this with his hands tied.
Varma is neither a remake or a Bala film.
After watching this I only had two questions,,, why did they film this? And why did I watch it?
It takes a seat above Arjun Reddy and Kabir singh in terms of objectifying women. I can understand why people aren't ranting over this because Varma gets to a point where you can't take anything seriously. Bala is a distinctive filmmaker who has given us disruptive films. Even his worst has a sense of Bala-esque to it. This really feels like he was handcuffed. If it was not that, then I really can't guess what he was smoking before calling every shot. I hope he comes back with an original, rooted and uncompromising trademark Bala film.
Varmaa pulled down my expectations on Snyder Cut JL
Lets forget this Nightmare
If Aditya Varma had been replaced by this filim, "Mahan" movie would never have happened.
NB: I didn't like Aditya Varma either. But it's making is better than this.
Tea Podu Na,

Enna Tea Thool Matum Than Iruku? 🤡
Man, there are getting to be so many "Arjun Reddy" remakes that they can't think of any more surnames for the title character... or first names. There are at least enough of these remakes for them to just go ahead and release the fabled Zack Sny-I mean Bala cut of the Tamil one, because of course what the critics want to see is a movie that the folks behind "Adithya Varma" thought was bad enough to completely reshoot. Dhruv Vikram remains in the title role, now Varmaa Vasudevan, but no less brilliant and narcissistic as a hotheaded medical student. Just as he prepares to leave the college on principle after getting into a fight, a meet-cute with Megha Chowdhury's Megha…
Varma, varaama irundhurukkalaam.
Bala mama🤣
No wonder they scraped this film. It doesn't work as a standalone film and certainly doesn't work out as Arjun Reddy remake. Sometimes even a scene to scene remake tend to have some soul, but this one (which is an hour less than original) doesn't.
