Thanks to its visual splendor and the insane level of traditional in-camera visual effects on display, this film looks almost as fresh as the day it was made. Camp maximalist gothic romance to its core, Bram Stoker's Dracula is deliriously good fun and an adaptation boasting all the weird spirit of its source material.

The Souvenir: Part II 2021
A sequel that breathes life into the cold and sometimes frustrating inertia of its predecessor. There's a metatextual satisfaction in watching the on-screen cast's incredulity at scripted moments based on the plot beats of Part 1, and a freedom to be found in the knowledge that it's not supposed to be understood or even liked, it's simply what happened.

Apocalypse Now 1979
A plot that is an exercise in splitting hairs over morality could not more suitably articulate the US Vietnam intervention. While Kilgore's bombing of a beach to Ride of the Valkyries might yield some heroic material for the broadcasters, there's no pretence with Kurtz's corner of the battlefield. The audience bears witness to a doomed mission into the jungle to kill a man a few weeks earlier than Malaria would already take him. It's blind leading the blind, perfectly encapsulated in the haunting chaos of every setpiece.
