  first 25 minutes is probably the best movie of all time, let alone biopic. absolute cinema, mann and lubezki at the height of their considerable powers taking grainy, intense closeups and blown-out digital highlights and chopping them with swoony slow-motion boxing/singing/historical chance meetings right up to the point of abstraction. makes you feel like the '60s really was the time when it all happened man.

  of course it does settle down into narrative and the baked-in restrictions of the biopic…

  pros:
  - the theater i went to had those big barcalounger reclining seats, which was very nice.

  - my friend justin bought the tickets.

  - i assume everyone involved with this film got paid on time.

  cons:

  - no matter how many of these miserable things i watch, i'm always taken aback by the sheer contempt with which they're crafted. utterly bilious, every second suffused with sneering disdain for the audience, for the writers, the actors, the director, the key…
