Some great musical numbers and songs. The visuals are great. But the character motivations felt cliche and contrived. Barnum abandons his family/performers because the plot needs him to. Zac Efron falls in love because why not?

It's far from a perfect film. The middle being kind of messy, as it tries to struggle with too many big ideas. There are long stretches where the plot doesn't move anywhere. But like McDonaugh's first film, In Bruges, I left the theater emotionally moved and grappling with the film's themes.
