Wild at Heart 1990
Very Lynch, although that's not entirely a compliment. I think the ending (which was changed from the source novel as opposed to just being rushed) represents a schism between the kind of film I was expecting, Wizard of Oz with a dark, American edge, hence all the references, and what Wild at Heart actually is. Still an enjoyable movie but it threw me for a loop y'know? Expectations subverted, but at what cost.

Oz the Great and Powerful 2013
The Wizard was never my favourite part of the original Wizard of Oz, but this movie makes a...decent case for him needing an origin. I say decent because the first half is a real drag and the rest of it is a standard, inoffensive kids film. Really, the special effects, and the rendering of Oz, end up being the highlights. And Rachel Weisz!

Poor Things 2023
Yes indeed, worth the wait to (legally) watch in the UK, deserving of all the hype and awards. In terms of camp, horny-as-fuck tales of emancipation and self-discovery I don't know how you can do much better than this.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a baby to punch...

Moonlight 2016
A tragedy in three parts this one is, beautifully illustrating masculinity as a constant performance. To be a man, in Chiron's case, is to lie. You have to be tough, and thus angry, but you can't ever use that anger in a productive way. You have to boldly assert your promiscuity, but promiscuous women are bitches. You can be emotional but only if that emotion involves hurting someone else. And friendship? That's part of the same test, and if you…
