  Moana 2 2024

  I like it a lot more than the previous 2 outings from Disney animation (Strange World and Wish) but its conversion from an episodic TV series and lack of Miranda leaves it severely hamstrung. 

  The characters are endearing enough and it has some good jokes but overall pretty forgettable especially in comparison to the excellence of the first. 

  I think it looks pretty great which is apparently not a widely held opinion.

  Conclave 2024

  Snuck this one in just in case it wins Best Picture in a couple hours and can firmly say it’s pretty good. 

  Performances are mostly top-notch and it looks and sounds great. My main gripe is that I never felt a sense of dramatic tension. Anytime there was strife, it was promptly resolved so we could move onto the next temporary set back. I think the ending is fine but very much feels like the story was built to suit the ending instead of the other way around.

  Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 1999

  There’s a lot of bad stuff in this movie but the spectacle is so impressive, especially considering when it was released, that I cant help but give it some props.

  While the plot machinations leading up to it are kinda nonsensical, the pod race is a legitimately great set piece.

  Downsizing 2017

  The beginning is actually creative and interesting but it completely falls apart after the first third or so. The rest of the movie could be serviceable to some but I found it so boring and ineffectual. 

  They had an idea for a Black Mirror episode and then just Frankensteined a rom com on to the end to pad the runtime to a full feature length.

Following
