I mean, come on. Even poking holes in this is fun. Why do the Klingons have a database of all of Earth's animals? Did no one go to Golden Gate Park for days? I mean, look - valid questions. But the 5 stars is for the comedic gold that happens in '80s San Fran. Also, essentially saving the franchise with the zaniest possible plot.
This movie is more aware of toy history than people give it credit for. Robin Williams' character feels deeply inspired by Hasbro's Alan Hassenfeld, the playful toy company founder who insisted, after the death of his brother, that the corporation produce no GI Joes with actual firing weapons. In the '90s, this was walked back a bit to match the changing times. In addition, the movie is way ahead of its time in predicting drones, and the weaponization of play. TOYS was made for me, and I can't give it less than the best.
Add a Seinfeld slap bass and a laugh track and this maybe gets three stars.
