I think some elements of this story aren't super resonant with me (I don't think it does a great job wrestling with real-world mental health stuff, for instance, but I also don't think that's part of its project), but overall I find lots of beauty (and lots of effectively disturbing moments) in this film. This movie is more aware of toy history than people give it credit for. Robin Williams' character feels deeply inspired by Hasbro's Alan Hassenfeld, the playful toy company founder who insisted, after the death of his brother, that the corporation produce no GI Joes with actual firing weapons. In the '90s, this was walked back a bit to match the changing times. In addition, the movie is way ahead of its time in predicting drones, and the weaponization of play. TOYS was made for me, and I can't give it less than the best.
Add a Seinfeld slap bass and a laugh track and this maybe gets three stars.
