Forget the questions of mannerisms, voice, caricature. What Hoffman really captured here was the being of a writer. Hiscurious, open to people and the world, observant and insightful, with a capacity for wonder. Yet hie also hard and discerning, jealous of his material, with all the arrogance of insecurity. The painful, perhaps shameful, way Capote treats Smith is wrenching to watch yet perhaps also too simple: it would be interesting to look into the ways that Perry might also have…

All the queer glory I expected. Is this the most femme Tilda Swinton has ever looked on screen? Annie Lennox's version of "Every Time We Say Goodbye" was incredibly poignant, and maybe the best performance of Cole Porter on screen.

It all runs on Streisand's charisma, which is considerable. She's virtually impossible to look away from, and Kahn is pitch-perfect. As an exercise in making a live-action cartoon, it's pretty spot-on. You couldn't ask for more than that final chase scene. It just wasn't quite possible for me to forget about Bringing Up Baby and wish I was watching that instead.
