The French Connection 1971
Based on what I've seen of his work, it seems like Friedkin can be characterized as a director of sequences more so than a director of films. There are long stretches of this that are absolutely gripping and technically impressive, but as a whole film it's hacked together and unpolished. Pink Flamingos 1972
On paper, this is — in literally every way — Not For Me™. But look: I laughed my ass off while sitting in a row of friends who were laughing their ass off while we were in a crowd of people laughing their ass off. There were no asses left in the wake of this, frankly.
I don't even know how to rate this as a movie, but the experience was — at a minimum — 5 stars. On 35mm too.
