  Only in a goddamn giallo film could the A plot be “Odysseus taunts the Cyclops” while the B plot is The Count of Monte Cristo and the C plot is a Frasier-style farce. Perfect. No notes.

  I am shocked at how early this movie was for Kurosawa and how masterful it is, how incredible the atmosphere he achieves is. The movie is partially about the evil done in our names (the crimes committed with Murakami's stolen gun), and the restlessness and poverty and clear unprocessed grief of post-war Japan mix with the dreamy heat wave weather to make something really special and effective.
