Sciamma delivers a strong follow up to Portrait of a Lady on Fire with Petite Maman. The sparse plot is subverted by the film’s ability to ensnare audiences in the same sense of childlike wonder that Nelly experiences. Audiences are reminded with their own memories of innocence and joy of childhood friendship that Nelly experiences with Marion. While it feels a little slow at times, the emotionally rich performance that Joséphine and Gabrielle Sanz deliver make them talents to watch, absolutely makes this film worth a watch, and I still find myself thinking about that final song a day later.

this succeeded as a film for me but not as a horror film nor even a thriller. at times I felt the pacing was inconsistent and the existence creates of the witch herself did not drive the plot in the way I expected. surprising vibrancy in low light which i am impressed by but I do not feel as though it makes up for the sparse story that The Witch provides.
