  Shanghai Blues is just one of the most joyful, spirited and touching films I have seen. It felt like I had injected myself with some long lasting mood enhancing drug. It has the atmosphere and cinematic style of a jaunty old-fashioned Technicolor MGM musical.   Lolita wouldn't stand alone in Kubrick's filmography by any reason but Shelley Winters' scorching performance. She simply owns any scene she is in and the films suffers inmensely once she's not in it.

  After reading many reviews describing Monster as an exercise in empathy that proves blame is subjective (because "everyone does their best"), i feel the need to say something very clear: understanding is not condoning.
  Just because this film shows the perspectives of everyone involved, doesn't mean they are all relative and equally 'valid'. There is such a thing as good and bad. Trying to be just and fair to the human experience shouldn't delude Kore-eda's poignancy.
