It's influence might be more impactful than the film itself. Tokyo Drifter's fingerprints are all over so many stylized action movies, with its unbelievable air of detached coolness that clearly influenced works like Drive, John Wick, and most of Tarantino's filmography.
It's weaker than Suzuki's other standout film, Branded to Kill, but Tokyo Drifter is work seeing to at least see its sincere explosion of pop art inspired visuals polished over a slick narrative.
This movie could stand to be either more serious or more funny but it trying to be both just doesn't work. I needed this movie about a monkey to be more bananas.
