    Film as a medium is not designed for factual accuracy. However, it is ideal for conveying emotional truths, and that is where Marie Antoinette thrives. Despite the outward appearance of excess, frivolity, and carelessness, this is a tragedy about lost youth at its core. Expertly cast (with so many up-and-comers) with luscious visuals and an eclectic musical mix that somehow works, Coppola is on her A game, and this film deserves more credit and recognition.

    And maybe I’m an Antoinette apologist, what of it?

    It brings me no joy to criticize this film. I am a defender of at least some of Disney’s live action remakes; I genuinely adore Cinderella and the Little Mermaid for bringing characters to life with real heart and chemistry, alongside production values to match. I even find charms in middle-tier adaptations like Aladdin. Unfortunately, there is limited charm or chemistry in this film, despite the best efforts of a committed and magical Rachel Zegler.
