I love a well-executed one-shot film, and this one gets extra credit for the form elevating the content. It's not just a gimmick, it's maybe the only way this particular story can be told. Even at 90 min, with as much stress and anxiety as they're piling on, it sometimes feels like it struggles to fill the space with story. An ending that is inevitable and still surprising caps a well-made film that, despite its execution, left me admiring it more intellectually than viscerally.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2023
A bummer that this came out amidst the strikes, because I think it is every bit as fun and good as the Spider-Verse movies. Amazing animation, a ton of heart, laugh-out-loud funny, and just magnificent voice acting. Can't wait to come back to it.

Killers of the Flower Moon 2023
Scorsese continues to contemplate his own relationship to violence, violence-as-entertainment, and the effect of centering the worst of our society in media in the twilight of his career in frankly astonishing ways. A film that's just as much about what it's about, as it is about the cognitive dissonance that can be achieved in the name of comfort and wealth, and the absolute horrors we can justify to ourselves as we slip our way into the abyss.

Probably doesn't work so well if Glen Hansard's original music wasn't so fucking good, but it is so here we are. I'm a sucker for anything that is about how art can save your life, and doubly so when the thing shows The Process. A tiny, little gem of a movie. It's nothing more than what it wants/needs to be.
