More apologia than review. This movie is sure to be cringe in an age of cynicism, and it is. It's quaint and saccharine—and even has a little interlude of woke didacticism. But it's also weirdly captivating, especially if you take it less as a film (it experimentally departs from many cinematic convections, and is interesting on that basis alone), and more like a museum piece, like a virtual diorama instillation. Live-action cartoon. Stupid and boring and ugly. Result of third-generation inbreeding. Characters are devoid of charisma. Wren is full of smirking arrogance, recklessly putting others in mortal danger. The quasi-Sith are more disciplined, subdued, composed, than the quasi-Jedi, much more like actual Jedi. The story is all exposition, the plot is all busywork. The soundtrack oversells the action; it's cloying and bombastic and gives everything a feeling of irony. Ahsoka runs like a girl.
Must sadly acknowledge I don't like this movie. Robert Eggers is a weaker writer and storyteller without his brother's collaboration. Much of the dialogue is perfunctory or otherwise poetic grandstanding about how the metaphor has been literalized. The acting is unconvincing and tasteless and annoying, with the exception of the nosferatu himself (and even that grows monotonous after the first few encounters).
