The creeping sense of dread throughout most of the film was executed masterfully by the director. Added to by the film’s uses of symbolism and editing, such as various dissolve sequences that overlap two different scenes, to make for an interesting and intriguing watch. Matthew Goode, not an actor I’m so familiar with, was outstanding in the role of the enigmatic uncle, as was Mia Wasikowski as the troubled protagonist.

Beautiful and touching story set during the 228 massacre in Taiwan. Excellent performances from the entire cast and delicately paced direction. This is a film I know I will want to see again.

Two stars is generous, but I didn't completely dislike this movie. The first hour was mildly entertaining but, like the entirety of the film, seemed to drag on for an eternity. So many tedious, nauseating panning shots across the city made for trying viewing.

Mix in a completely detestable cast of characters with which no sympathy could be drawn, despite the director's best efforts, and a plethora of patience-testing CGI montages and you have one film I am glad to see the back of.

    Life of Pi

    ★★★★

The highlight of the movie was in the visuals, with some extremely beautiful moments while the protagonist, Pi, is stranded out at sea. The story was engaging, with a great display of a progressing relationship between Pi and Richard Parker, the tiger.

The Last 10 minutes of the movie was slightly disappointing, in which the audience seems to be treated like simpletons, having the symbolism spelled out so abruptly and unnecessarily. And I don't think the overall message of the movie is something I would agree with, although this did little to detract from the positive experience.
