The video-gamey animation wasn’t my favorite, but absolutely floored by this rendering of animal life and behavior. Every movement and glance and interaction was so lovingly specific, with no attempt to anthropomorphize these creatures — I’ve never seen anything like it on screen. The scene when the secretarybird ascends towards the light.. and the way the larger themes creep up on you - disaster, survival, togetherness — was magic.
I remembered this film being very affecting when I first saw it in high school and wanted to revisit it. I had forgotten it was woody allen but that checks out with its pretentious philosophizing/aestheticization of greed and moral indifference. But somehow, it holds up? my younger self found the lust and passion and brooding charisma of Jonathan Rhys Myers a convincing engine for the plot but this time I noticed the stiffness, the cartoonishisness of all the interpersonal interactions — a layer of humor and even farce that underscores the operatic, tragic, melodramatic nature of the story.
I love slow and contemplative but this felt so lazy and self indulgent. The loneliness and quiet despair of white rural suburbia, a quirky daughter and her inscrutable mother — themes we’ve seen a million times before, paraded pretentiously in long scenes with no emotional depth or weight.
