I liked this but didn’t love it…very fun and Rob Pattinson is a legend, but the story kind of darts in one direction after the other without going anywhere. While that does make for enjoyable chaos and good satire, it also leaves a lot of confusing loose ends and half-sketched character arcs. Can’t complain too much though, how often do you get a messy, sprawling, star-studded blockbuster from one of the all-time greats like this?
Mixed feelings. It makes sense that cis imagination of gender transgression, played by a cis actor, especially without any consultation/consideration of actual trans perspectives, will always come up short. I have to admit that reading reviews and interviews with Xavier Dolan after the fact have sort of soured my opinion. But from the perspective of craft this movie is well-made, and despite its queer characters feeling uneasily caricatured in some ways it does a good job with other things. It…
